Inspiration, where do you find your inspiration? After i did the last post I have been trying to work out where mine actually comes from and I think rather than one place I get inspiration from lots of different places but the common factor is to be inspired I need to be comfy!! I love to look through magazines (see previous post) and beautiful books but am truly inspired when I am in my comfy pajama pants ( no matter what time of the day) with a long t-shirt on that doesn't matter if it gets paint on it. I need to take all my jewelery off, and make up ( both of which I love wearing but just not when I am creating). Then I can sit surrounded by sketch books, pretty pens and pencils, magazines, fabric and then see where that takes me. Sometimes it takes me out to the kettle to make a coffee or tea and to the fridge just in case someone has snuck in and put something yummy in there in the last five minutes. Sometimes it takes me to the computer to visit blog friends and look at beautiful pictures for a few hours.
Other times I will lay out a few different types of fabric and see how they look together, sometimes those accidentally fabric placements look the best together. It is not uncommon that I can take longer to choose the fabrics for a creation than it actually takes to make it.
Oh I also have to have music playing in the background and it can change from Mozart to the Rogue Traders or a bit of Duran Duran depending on what mood I am in, somehow I have to find the music to match so when I go out I am always looking for new CD's for a change.
Once I get an idea I will scribble it down in my little book and do a little sketch and then will go off and do something and continue to think about it for a few days. I will have to learn to date these entries as often Laura and I (actually every single time) will come up with exactly the same idea or theme and then weeks later it will appear in a magazine and we will think that is a bit spooky.
One of the books I bought late last year from Amazon was called ' Living the Creative Life, ideas and inspirations from working artists' by Rice Freeman-Zachery. The reviews had sou nded really good and I hadn't seen it anywhere so I ordered it. When it arrived ( with other books I might add) I was a little disappointed because it wasn't pretty pretty and a little bit spooky looking to me. I am not a fan of altered doll head art and things like that and there was quite a bit of that scary sort of sculpture in it. I did however take it with me one hospital admission and read it cover to cover and you know what it was really really good. I tried to flick through the bits I didn't want to look at but in the end I even went back and read them. It has lots of little try this bits in it which were really very good and there was even a piece written by one of the artists who did the 'scary' sculpture bits who said something along the lines of he realised that not everyone likes the same piece of art but we shouldn't discredit someones work because it is not to our taste. True and I suppose in some way his creativity is an inspiration in that it encourages me to find my own path ( which would be one covered in glitter and flowers) and be confident in your journey down it. Oh that is so deep....sorry. Point...if you get a chance to read this book take it, you will get something out of it ( even if you skip over the bits you don't like). These other books however are a small snapshot of my collection and they are more like the pretty books I like to skim through and I am sure you will recognise some that you have in your own collection.
I just like to sit and sew and then look up and see the books or magazines stacked up and then look across and see collections of lace and sparkles and ribbons all awaiting their turn in some new creation ( if I can bear to part with them that is).
I got these great boxes with perspex lids from a recycle art shop called ' Reverse Garbage' in Brisbane and they are just perfect for putting laces and ribbons in so that you can still see them but they are protected..and they only cost $1.00 each, I should have bought some more.
Just as a quick aside thank you all for your lovely comments, if we haven't replied it is because of a glitch with typepad, the comments are showing up on the blog but not in our emails, which is a nice surprise if we visit our own blog but we miss them if them if we don't , so don't think we are ignoring you, we just didn't see you there!!
